Apple Introduces iOS 11, HomePod Speakers

Apple on Monday introduced the HomePod speaker to compete with Amazon.com’s Alexa assistant and Echo devices for users who prefer voice-operated systems for shopping, planning and other tasks.

Apple will begin shipping the HomePod to the United States, Britain and Australia in December.
Apple introduced iOS 11, the next version of the software that powers the iPhone and iPad, and rolled out new tools for developers to create augmented reality applications for the devices.
And taking direct aim at services like those provided by PayPal Holdings, Apple also debuted peer-to-peer payments for Apple Pay in which users will be able to send money through the Messages app on iPhones.
That money can immediately be used in retail stores that take Apple Pay or can be moved to a bank account.

Akeredolu Signs N170.8bn Budget, Promises To Improve Capital Expenditure

Governor Akeredolu made the resolution in Akure while signing the 2017 Appropriation Bill into law at the Governor’s Office in Akure. The budget totals N170.85 billion.
He said the huge deficit in various sectors needed to be tackled, hence the administration tried to reduce the embarrassing imbalance between recurrent and capital expenditure.
“This bill has a provision of N170, 846, 580 billion broken into debt service (principal) N8.127 billion, statutory transfers N8.374 billion, recurrent expenditure N95.159 billion, and capital expenditure N59.187 billion.
“These fiscal estimates have been scrutinised meticulously to capture the aspirations of this administration on real development.
“It is important to state that the government has initiated special intervention strategies on agriculture, job creation, infrastructure, education, technology and rural development.
Akeredolu, however, expressed determination to improve fiscal circumstances substantially through revenue generation.
He said, “This administration is not unmindful of the dire challenges faced by it, with regards to Budget implementation, mainly due to the paucity of funds.

“We are, however, determined to improve our fiscal circumstances substantially, through revenue generation. We shall devise means of plugging loopholes exploited by unscrupulous elements to deny the State of deserved revenue.
“We shall expand our tax base aggressively. This administration requires the cooperation of all concerned in ensuring that all revenues accruable to the State are realised with minimal stress,” he said.
The Governor thanked members of the House of Assembly for promptly scrutinising and passing the 2017 Appropriation Bill.
Earlier, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, David Oleyelogun, appreciated members of the House for their cooperation and commitment towards making the budget a reality.
The Speaker noted that the Governor sent the appropriation of N169, 720, 580 000.00 to the House.
“After justice was done to the appropriation bill, some additions and subtractions were made in certain areas, after which the difference of N1,126,000,000 occurred to take care of tertiary institutions in the state”, he stated.

Federer Cruises To Victory After Comeback

Top seed Roger Federer resumed his comeback on the grass with a 6-3 6-1 demolition of Japan’s Yuichi Sugita in the Halle Open first round on Tuesday (June 20), with the Swiss looking sharper than in last week’s shock loss in Stuttgart.

The 18-time grand slam winner won the Australian Open as well as Miami and Indian Wells before skipping the entire clay court season to prepare for an assault on an eighth Wimbledon title and the U.S. hardcourt season.
The 35-year-old’s first match last week at the Stuttgart Open was a flop when he suffered a shock loss to German veteran Tommy Haas who was ranked 302 at the time, despite leading for a set and a half.
But Federer, an eight-time winner on Halle grass, was in complete control against world number 66 Sugita — a lucky loser who replaced injured Lu Yen-Hsun — on Tuesday.
The world number five required a little longer after he wasted three match points at 5-0 before breaking Sugita again to clinch the match after 52 minutes.

Osinbajo Urges Northern Traditional Rulers To Counsel Misguided Youths

The Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, has called on traditional rulers to advise misguided youths in their domains against divisive actions.

Professor Osinbajo made the call on Tuesday when he met with traditional rulers from the Northern states in continuation of his consultations with leaders of the North and South East.
The consultations follow the recent “quit notice” given to Igbos in the North by Arewa youths, in reaction to the continued agitation for secession by groups in the South East.
Professor Osinbajo, who noted that traditional rulers have a role to play in “countering the voices of divisiveness”, urged them not to relent in playing their unique roles.
“Let us continue to counsel the misguided elements among our youth, who think that ethnic confrontation is a game and that words can be thrown around carelessly without repercussion,” he said.
“Having said this, let me say that we are not deaf to the legitimate concerns and frustrations arising from around the country. Every part of Nigeria has its own grievances. But these have to be expressed graciously and managed with mutuality rather than with scorn and disdain.”

Stressing that Nigeria is stronger and better as one unified nation, the Acting President warned that the hate hate-filled and divisive rhetoric and agitations in parts of the country are “unjustifiable, unacceptable and often times illegal”.
He also stressed that such agitations were capable of rubbishing the sacrifices made by many Nigerians over the years to keep the country united.
“Nigeria has seen enough violence and bloodshed in its history, the price of our unity has already been paid in the blood and lives of hundreds of thousands of soldiers and civilians,” he said.
Professor Osinbajo assured the traditional rulers that the Federal Government is committed to keeping the country united, adding that rather than viewing the country’s diversity as a challenge, it should be a source of unity.
“We must never take our diversity for granted; the fullness of our strength actually lies in that diversity. And we must wield that diversity, not as a divisive tool, but instead as a binding agent,” he said.
Traditional rulers present at the meeting include the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Yakubu Dogara; and the National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno, were also among those in attendance.
The ongoing consultations by the Acting President are expected to be concluded on Wednesday with a meeting with the 36 governors.

Armstrong-Era UCI Chief Verbruggen Dies At 75

The former president of the international cycling union (UCI), Hein Verbruggen, who was in charge during the reign of disgraced doping offender Lance Armstrong and spearheaded preparations for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, has died aged 75.

The Dutchman headed the UCI from 1991 to 2005 and long rejected claims he was too lenient with the American cyclist, who has since admitted to years of systematic doping and was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles and banned for life.
An independent commission in 2015 found the UCI management team under Verbruggen, a long-time former International Olympic Committee (IOC) member, showed leniency, especially towards Armstrong, in the fight against doping.
“The UCI is sad to hear about the passing of former President and IOC Member Hein Verbruggen. Our thoughts are with his family and friends,” the UCI said.
Verbruggen was also an IOC member from 1996 to 2008, before becoming an honorary member, and led the IOC’s coordination commission for the preparations of the Beijing Olympics.
“Hein Verbruggen was a fearless fighter for his sport. Thanks to his great engagement and his management skills, he greatly contributed to the success of… Beijing 2008 as Chair of the Coordination Commission. For this he will be always remembered,” IOC President Thomas Bach said.
Bach said flags at the IOC headquarters in Switzerland would be flown at half-staff.

Putin accuses BBC of supporting opposition leader Navalny

Putin accuses BBC of supporting opposition leader Navalny

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday responded to a question from a BBC reporter on opposition leader Alexei Navalny by accusing the British broadcaster of supporting the Kremlin critic.
“When I heard you were from the BBC, I didn’t doubt for a moment you would ask precisely that question because it’s in a certain sense propaganda of the people whom you support,” Putin said answering a question about whether he sees Navalny as a political competitor following nationwide protests organised by the opposition leader.
Navalny has been sentenced to 30 days behind bars after being detained Monday on his way to a protest in Moscow against government corruption, where hundreds were arrested in the city centre.
“Any form of protest, including demonstrations, should remain in the framework of the law,” Putin said. “Those who violate the law must answer for these violations.”

“It’s one thing to organise protests, and another to use these protests as an instrument for provocations and exacerbating the situation for self-promotion,” Putin said, without mentioning Navalny by name in his customary manner.
“This is done not to improve the situation in the country, not to solve people’s problems, but to solve one’s own problems that have to do with self-publicity.”
Navalny has organised protests on March 26 and June 12 after airing a film alleging that Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev commands vast personal wealth through a network of foundations, which was viewed over 23 million times and re-ignited the opposition’s anti-corruption message.
The 41-year-old lawyer has announced his intention to stand for president against Putin in 2018, though Putin himself has dodged questions whether he will run for what would be his fourth historic term.
Putin was speaking to journalists after his annual marathon phone-in with Russian citizens, during which he said that judging by the public’s questions sent to the studio, government corruption is “not a priority.”

Akwa Ibom Assembly confirms Godwin Abraham as substantive chief judge

The Akwa Ibom House of Assembly on Thursday confirmed the appointment of Justice Godwin Abraham, as substantive Chief Judge of the state.
The confirmation followed a report by the Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Human Rights, Justice and Public Petition, Mr Otobong Akpan at plenary.
Akpan, during presentation of the report confirmed that Abraham had earlier been screened by the National Judicial Council and found worthy to occupy the office of the Chief Judge.
The committee Vice Chairman said in line with Section 271 sub section 2, 3 and 4, of the 1999 Constitution as amended, Abraham had qualified to practice as a legal officer, adding that the appointee has been in active practice for 32 years now.

The House dissolved into the committee of the whole and ratified the report of the committee.
The House Leader, Mr Udo Keriean (PDP) moved the motion that the House confirmed Abraham as substantive Chief Judge and was seconded by Mr Ime Okon (PDP) representing Ibiono Ibom state constituency.
The Speaker, Mr Onofiok Luke in his remarks commended the appointee whom he said had the pedigree and the credentials deserving of his office.
While congratulating Abraham on his appointment, he however used the occasion to urge him to take advantage of the Criminal Justice bill passed by the house to decongest the prisons.
He directed the clerk Mrs Mandu Umoren, to communicate the decision of the House to the Gov Udom Emmanuel and other relevant authorities for action.

Cubans favor continued thawing ties against possible policy change by Trump

HAVANA, June 13 (Xinhua) -- Rumors have been hovering over the streets of Havana in the last few days about a possible rollback in U.S. policy towards the Caribbean island, reversing the historical detente initiated in 2014 by former U.S. President Barack Obama.
According to media reports, U.S. President Donald Trump is set to announce in Miami on Friday a rollback to the thaw between Washington and Havana, a promise he made during his election campaign last year.
For Cubans, this possible scenario would be a return to the past, marked by political confrontation and economic limitations due to the financial embargo that Washington has still imposed on the island.
"It would be a big mistake in President Trump's policy towards Cuba, because the U.S. has many possibilities to invest and contribute to the economic development of the country," said Javier Casamayor, a tourism guide for the state-run Gaviota tour agency.
This firm, part of a business conglomerate belonging to the Revolutionary Armed Forces, operates a five-star hotel in Havana along with U.S. company Starwood.
According to different sources, the Trump administration has been discussing policy changes that include prohibiting American firms from doing business with companies associated to the Cuban military, such as Gaviota.
"The tourism industry would be seriously harmed. Since relations were restored, U.S. citizens have become the second largest group of visitors to our country. If Trump limits them, there would be a direct economic impact," said Casamayor.
The White House has also been debating new restrictions on U.S. tourists to Cuba, which have more than tripled since Obama's 2014 announcement.
In the first five months of this year, about 284,500 U.S. citizens visited Cuba under 12 U.S. government-permitted categories that include people-to-people contacts, academic, cultural, and educational exchanges.
The figure, disclosed on Tuesday by the Cuban ambassador to Washington, Jose Ramon Cabanas, represents as many Americans who visited the island in 2016.
"I am not sure that rolling back the policy will work because Cuba is a very interesting destination for Americans. This is not about what Donald Trump wants but rather what most Americans demand," Mac Josselin, a U.S. tourist who was touring Havana, told Xinhua.
Like Josselin, thousands of Americans and U.S. organizations advocate continuing the thawing bilateral ties as it contributes to the development of both nations.
"I think Trump will change the policy and we will go back to the past. It will be more difficult for Americans to come to Cuba and we may see a return to confrontation, although I hope common sense prevails," Emilio de Leon, a Cuban-American, told Xinhua.
Other ideas under discussion, according to officials familiar with the matter, include guidelines that would require Americans to formally explain how their travel to Cuba benefits the United States and the Cuban people, as well as increased scrutiny of travelers and the frequency of their visits.
Travel restrictions could impact U.S. airlines with direct flights to Cuba as well as the cruise industry.
On Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Cuba "must begin to address human rights challenges" if it wants Washington to move toward more normal relations.
Cuban President Raul Castro said earlier this year that his government is willing to continue negotiating pending bilateral issues with the new U.S. administration. However, he warned that Havana would not make political concessions.
Before ending his term, Obama eliminated the controversial "wet foot, dry foot" policy which granted special migratory treatment to Cubans and allowed them to remain in the United States as permanent residents.
Since the rapprochement began, authorities of the two sides have signed more than 20 cooperation agreements in different areas and several U.S. companies have successfully started operations in Cuba.
Airbnb, the world's largest online hotel service, said last week that it has earned nearly 40 million U.S. dollars since entering the Cuban market in early 2015.
"Obviously Trump is trying to please a hard line sector that is still rooted in the past and does not want the best for the Cuban people," Nelson Lopez, a college student, told Xinhua.
In December 2014, in the most sweeping change in U.S.-Cuban relations in five decades, Obama announced plans to normalize ties with Cuba in a move that quickly sparked controversy at home.
Since then, improvements have been made in diplomatic, social and commercial ties, while Cuba has experienced a tourism "boom" receiving a record-high 4.1 million visitors in 2016.

Second Championship club come forward with 'good offer' for John Terry

John Terry to Birmingham City: Harry Redknapp confirms ‘good offer’ for former Chelsea and England captain

John Terry is now a free agent after arriving at Chelsea as a youngster in 1998

John Terry was earlier set to join Bournemouth on £100k-a-week deal, but that could be scuppered

HARRY REDKNAPP has confirmed he has made a “good offer” for former Chelsea captain John Terry in what would be the most sensational move of the summer.
But reports in Italy this morning have already claimed the bizarre transfer has already been done after talks with the Aston Villa target.

Terry has been tight-lipped on whether he will carry on playing at all, with rumours of a coaching career despite interest from Premier League sides West Brom and Bournemouth.
But Redknapp who is bidding to transform the fortunes of Birmingham after years of Championship stagnation with cash to burn from their Hong Kong owners, said: “I’d love to have him at the football club.

“We’ve made him a good offer and we have done the best we can. It’s up to John now, but we would love him at Birmingham.

APC expels Jibrin, suspended lawmaker

The All Progressives Congress(APC) chapter in Bebeji local government area of Kano state has expelled Abdulmumin Jibrin, suspended member of the house of representatives.
Sani Ranka, chairman of the party in the local government, hinged the action on alleged anti-party activities by Jibrin.
Ranka accused the former chairman house committee on appropriations of promoting divisive tendencies.
“The party will not condone indiscipline and disrespect to leaders or duly constituted authority. We hereby inform the world that Jibrin has been expelled from our great party,” he said at a press briefing on Thursday.
Other party executives at the briefing said stakeholders reached a unanimous decision to expel Jibrin.
The lawmaker had accused Yakubu Dogara, the speaker, and some principal officers of the house of padding the 2016 budget, an allegation which those listed denied.
Apart from raising budget padding allegations, Jibrin had also ‎said some lawmakers were not “worthy” to belong to the house.
He was accused of misconduct and the house directed its ethics committee to probe him. The panel recommended his suspension, and Jibrin was suspended for 180 legislative days, which is approximately one year.
Earlier in the week, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) invited Jibrin over the budget padding allegations.
When TheCable contacted him for his response, Jibrin promised to get in touch later.
“I will call back for a response,” he said in response to a text message.

Apple sees autonomous cars as ‘core’ technology

Apple sees autonomous cars as ‘core’ technology

Apple views autonomous driving systems as a “core technology” for the future, chief executive Tim Cook said in an interview aired Tuesday.
Cook told Bloomberg television that Apple wants to move into the automotive sector because “there is a major disruption looming” from new technologies.
The auto sector, Cook said, is being transformed by artificial intelligence and autonomous driving technology as well as by the development of better electric cars and the growth of ridesharing.
“We are focusing on autonomous systems,” he told Bloomberg.

He said Apple sees this as “the mother of all AI projects” and that this is “a core technology that we view as very important.”
While Apple has given no indication of specific projects for autonomous vehicles, it has joined the list of companies with permits to test self-driving cars in California, according to state records.
The California-based tech giant is expected to focus on software systems, letting partners manufacture vehicles, but would understandably want to be able to test its navigation technology in cars.

NFF pay Rohr, Amuneke, Nkwocha, others with Aiteo cash

NFF pay Rohr, Amuneke, Nkwocha, others with Aiteo cash

The NFF recently signed a N2.5 billion sponsorship deal with oil company Aiteo Group who will assist in paying the football body’s salaries.
According to a report on official website of the Nigerian Football Federation, no fewer than 27 coaches were paid their outstanding salaries owed them by the body.
“The salaries of the Super Eagles’ Technical Adviser, Mr. Gernot Rohr, have also been settled up-to-date from the forex component of the transaction with Aiteo,” the NFF announced on Tuesday.
The payments were made direct to the accounts of the beneficiaries through NFF’s Financial Consultants (Financial Derivatives Company), appointed to manage the funds from the sponsors upon verification of the processes by NFF external auditors, PWC and payment instructions from the NFF secretariat.

We are very happy to announce that we have been able to pay a total of 27 coaches all the monies they were being owed, including some who worked with previous NFF Boards in what we termed ‘legacy payments,” NFF second Vice-President and the LMC chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko stated.
“It is our joy that the coaches can finally smile to the bank. A labourer deserves his wages, and that is why the present NFF administration worked assiduously hard to ensure the realization of this partnership.
“The NFF is grateful to Aiteo Group for this breakthrough in making our coaches happy.”
The coaches who were paid their outstanding salaries include: Salisu Yusuf, Alloy Agu, Fatai Amao, David Ngodigha, Ann Chiejine, Bala Mohammed, Kabiru Baleria, Emeka Amadi, Peter Dedevbo, Toyin Ayinla, Wemimo Oni, Auwal Bashir, Manu Garba, Bala Nikyu, Lateef Yusuf, Nduka Ugbade, Jolomi Atunne Alli.
Others are Ernest Salolomo, Queen Dolyn Akpan, Adamu Audu Ejo, Godwin Okon, Justin Madugu, Gidado Usman, Florence Omagbemi, Perpetua Nkwocha, Emmanuel Amuneke, Christopher Danjuma.

Colombia approves three-man gay marriage

Colombia approves three-man gay marriage

https://static.today.ng/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Victor-Hugo-Prada-John-Alejandro-Rodriguez-and-Manuel-Jose-Bermudez.jpg

Three gay men say they have gained legal recognition as the first “polyamorous family” in Colombia, where same-sex marriages were legalised last year.
“We wanted to validate our household… and our rights, because we had no solid legal basis establishing us as a family,” said one of the men, actor Victor Hugo Prada, in a video published by Colombian media on Monday.
He said he and his two partners, sports instructor John Alejandro Rodriguez and journalist Manuel Jose Bermudez, signed legal papers with a solicitor in the city of Medellin, establishing them as a family unit with inheritance rights.
This establishes us as a family, a polyamorous family. It is the first time in Colombia that has been done.”
Lawyer and gay rights activist German Rincon Perfetti said there are many three-person unions in Colombia but this was the first one to be legally recognised.
“It is a recognition that other types of family exist,” he told AFP.
A ruling by the constitutional court in April 2016 made Colombia the fourth South American country to definitively legalise same-sex marriage, after Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay.

Manchester United lodge bid for Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata as Spanish giants seek £70m

Manchester United lodge bid for Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata as Spanish giants seek £70m

  • Manchester United have officially tabled a bid for striker Alvaro Morata
  • Boss Jose Mourinho is keen to bring the Real Madrid forward to Old Trafford
  • Spanish champions are hopeful of thrashing out a deal in the region of £70m
  • Talks are expected in coming days with Morata keen to sort his future soon
Manchester United have lodged a bid for Alvaro Morata as their aggressive transfer strategy begins to take hold.
The Real Madrid striker will cost United upwards of £60million and is seen as a replacement for the recently released Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Real are hopeful of thrashing out a deal somewhere above £70m with further talks expected in the coming days.
Morata wants his future fixed within the fortnight and Jose Mourinho is keen for United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to handle business quickly.
It emerged on Monday that an official offer had been sent to Real, while Morata is open to a Premier League move after his return to the Bernabeu stuttered.
The 24-year-old rejoined the La Liga champions from Juventus last summer but started just 19 games.
His agent, Juanma Lopez, made it plain to Real last week that Morata was edging towards an exit, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema ahead of him in Zinedine Zidane's pecking order.

Igbo-haters, the Arewa ultimatum and our nation

Igbo-haters, the Arewa ultimatum and our nation

Fifty years after the civil war ended, Igbos do not yet feel a sense of belonging, acceptance or safety in the Federation called Nigeria. The sad part is that this belief is shared not just by the generation that witnessed the war and its deadly consequences, but Igbos across all generations, including the millennials who have been socialized into believing that there is a gap between their people and other Nigerians.
Let us not deceive ourselves about certain plain truths. The civil war is perhaps the most remarkable incident in Igbo history in the last century. The pain, the loss, all about it, is deeply imprinted in the Igbo consciousness. Whereas the Igbo nation has shown great resourcefulness since the war, and its people have proven to be enterprising and determined to hold their own in every sphere of life, including outstanding contributions to the making of the Nigerian state, there are Nigerians who still regard and treat the Igbo suspiciously.
Anti-Igbo sentiment may not be so openly expressed, but it is usually something beneath the surface. There are landlords in many parts of Nigeria, for example, who will never rent out their property to an Igbo man. The Igbo tenant is easily stigmatized. I have heard people complain that Igbo tenants are too stubborn or that when you rent a room to an Igbo man, he will end up sub-letting that one room to all kinds of persons from his village, putting pressure on the property’s limited facilities.
Some landlords insist that an Igbo tenant could even start eyeing the property, to buy it off the landlord, or if it is a shop, the Igbo trader would end up renting the entire street, and could turn the street into an Igbo neigbourhood. This stigma has been a source of agony for many Igbos seeking accommodation, particularly in Lagos, but it is of course completely baseless stereotyping. There are good and bad persons from virtually every Nigerian ethnic group.
The stereotyping of the Igbo person can also be found in the political arena. It is assumed by some persons, and such statements have been made to my hearing, that the only reason an Igbo man cannot be President of Nigeria is because every Igbo man sees himself as a potential President, and should the Presidency be zoned to the South East, the struggle for the ticket could result in inter-community strife in Igboland.
The name of the group is Igbo, but when other Nigerians want to be mischievous, or perhaps out of ignorance, they refer to Igbo as Ibo, and when you try to correct them, they may insist you don’t seem to understand. It is I-Before-Others (IBO).
Igbos have also been held responsible for all sorts of things, kidnapping, drug trafficking, child trafficking, armed robbery – even when there are criminals from virtually every community in Nigeria. Meanwhile, they are one of the most vertically educated ethnic groups in Nigeria, and the most enterprising in all fields.
A friend once said that if you enter any community in Nigeria and you don’t have an Igbo man running a small shop there, or engaged in some other kind of business, then you have no business staying in that community. Igbos are also obviously the most integrated ethnic group in Nigeria, which is why it is ironic that they are also the most vilified.
I wrote what I considered a harmless piece recently in which I referred to the declaration of Biafra in 1967 and quoted excerpts from the Ahiara Declaration. I got a phone call from a friend who declared that I should stop encouraging these “Biafrans”. Nothing I said made sense to him.
“You don’t know those people”, he declared.
“I know people from all parts of Nigeria,” I said.
“You don’t know Igbos. Has there been any problem in this country that you know in which Igbos have not been involved? They have started again, heating up the polity with threats of secession.”
“It is a sign that all is not well with Nigeria,” I retorted.
“Don’t mind them. I don’t think anybody wants to secede. If Igbos really want to secede, you think it is Nnamdi Kanu that will be speaking for them?”
“It takes just one illuminated soul to start a revolution.”
“Don’t bring that line. Everything is not textbook, this man. Just tell those Igbos not to include my people in whatever they are looking for. We are their neighbours. They dragged us into the civil war. This time around, they’ve gone to draw a map, including my people. Biafra does not extend to the South-South. We are just looking at them.”
“Biafra is an idea.”
“I don’t want to hear all these textbook things, I have told you. Which idea? See, most Nigerians do not support Biafra. They think Igbos are just playing games. I’ll send you some other articles written by other Nigerians and you’d see what I am talking about. People are angry that anybody will be talking about secession in 2017! Nigerians are fed up with Igbos and their games. President Jonathan gave them everything but on election day, many of them stayed at home and refused to vote. Now, they are talking secession.”
“But Yorubas are also talking about Oduduwa Republic.”
“The Yoruba are not going anywhere. What they want is restructuring, fiscal federalism. Which Oduduwa Republic?”
“The people of the Middle Belt are also aggrieved.”
“Anybody can be aggrieved. You can’t please Nigerians. And some of these things are political. Obasanjo became President, Niger Delta carried arms; Jonathan got there, Boko Haram kidnapped children, Buhari is there now, and all the ghosts of Biafra are frightening everybody. But these Igbos, tell them they are not going anywhere.”
“I am surprised you are talking like this.”

What is the matter with those people? They are all over Nigeria. They are even selling land in Lagos. But no outsider is allowed to buy half a plot of land in Igboland. You carry Igbo girl sef, na problem. Go and check your email. I will send you other perspectives on this matter.”
Before long, I received a mail indeed. The fellow had put together a collection of anti-Biafra, anti-Igbo articles which he urged me to read, with the rider that I should pay particular attention to the fact that some of those articles were written by Igbos.
I ignored the rider. Some of those articles could have been ghost written. What is clear, however, is that all is not well with Nigeria. We are a country that needs to be rescued from the centripetal forces tearing us apart, and the leading forces today would include, as was the case before now, ethnicity, religion, the politics of hate, and citizen alienation.
If my review of the stereotyping of Igbos in Nigeria and the reported conversation with an Igbo-hater does not fully convey the seriousness of this situation, then the June 6 ultimatum issued to all Igbos living in Northern Nigeria by a coalition of Northern Arewa youth groups should.
A group called the Northern Emancipation Network, comprising 16 Arewa youth groups, has asked all Igbos living anywhere in Northern Nigeria to pack their bags and baggage and be out of the Northern region by October 1, 2017. When the 19 Northern Governors met and dismissed the threat as misguided, the young Arewa Igbo-haters issued a riposte and more or less asked the Governors to shut up.
Their message is that since Igbos no longer want to be part of Nigeria, they should get out, because they, Arewa youths, do not want belong to the same political union with Igbos. They are angry that on May 30, the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and the Indigenous Peoples Organization of Biafra (IPOB) succeeded in shutting down a part of Nigeria to mark the 50th anniversary of the declaration of Biafra.
The arrogance of the Northern youths is insufferable. It speaks to virtually everything that other Nigerians are uncomfortable with about the Fulani North: a born-to-rule, hegemonic tendency.
It is an assault on the Nigerian Constitution, to the extent that the Constitution does not grant any individual or group, the right or the power to determine where any Nigerian may live or work or die or acquire property. All Nigerians are equal before the law. The Northern youths, who do not think so, held a meeting, a press conference, and issued statements.
The Governor of Kaduna state, Nasir el-Rufai asked the Nigeria Police to arrest them for promoting ethnic hatred. The only response we have had from the Police Headquarters so far, is from one Jimoh Moshood, described as Police Spokesman telling Nigerians that the Arewa youths “are not sitting in the market waiting to be picked up.”
Moshood, if you actually said that, then you should be relieved of your position forthwith. If you are a spokesperson and you have nothing intelligent to say, the best option is to remain silent, otherwise whatever you say will be used against you in the court of public opinion. So, the Nigeria police only arrest people when they go to the market and wait to be arrested? Is that the new police that we now have? The Northern Emancipation Network called Igbos all kinds of names – “unruly, reckless, insatiable, uncultured, confrontational, ungrateful” – and since they issued their ultimatum, the polity has been heated up, ethnic hate has been promoted, the Igbos of Nigeria have been further alienated.
This was how the civil war of 1967-70 started. Nigeria cannot afford another civil war. No country survives two civil wars. Already, Igbos in the North are reportedly relocating back to the South East or elsewhere in Nigeria. Young Nigerians from the North, the East and the South started the civil war. The politics of ethnicity and the rhetoric of hate ignited the fire that consumed the nation for three years. The scars have not healed because 50 years later, the youths of the North and the East are again lighting up the fire of hate. On June 6, the Northern Emancipation Network also asked Northerners in the East, I hope this includes the peripatetic herdsmen, to return to the North!
The Nigerian Government must take this on-going febrile conversation between the North and the East more seriously than it appears to be doing. The security agencies do not have to go to the markets to look for what is not there. When there is a threat to the state, it is their duty to identify the threat and act on it. All persons who are working hard and making provocative statements to cause a national crisis should be monitored and checkmated. With all the difficult challenges facing this country, at this moment, our security alert system should be pushed a notch higher.
If the security agencies fail to act, particularly on the matter of the coalition of Northern youths promoting Igbo hatred, the Federal Government would have committed a grievous sin, likely to be interpreted as aiding and abetting. And there would be persons who will legitimately ask: are we confronted with a hand of Jacob and voice of Esau situation? Who is sponsoring the Arewa youths? Who granted them the permission to use the platform of Arewa House to spew anti-Igbo hate speech? Who is blocking their arrest by the security agencies? What those boys have done is even worse than the threat of secession by Nnamdi Kanu and his supporters.
But the message is clear: Nigeria is not yet a nation. A country where any group or association can threaten to expel another group is not yet a nation. The common enemy is not the secessionists. The common enemies are the political leaders, the tribal demagogues, the political opportunists, the religious bigots, the paid shamanists, who continue to manipulate Nigeria’s destiny to suit their own purposes. There can be no country except the people love the nation and the state.
